Japenese knotweed: a formidable problem

In this issue we tackle the formidable problem of Japanese knotweed. Introduced into Britain in the 19th century as an ornamental plant, today it is a real menace in a wide range of habitats, including roadsides, riverbanks and derelict buildings. In summer the bamboo-like stems shoot to over 2m, suppressing all other growth.

As Nicolas Seal, a Director at Environet, points out: "You should aim to completely eradicate the knotweed before any construction works commence, unless you want to incur delays and major expense at a later stage in the project."

There are legal implications too. “If you cause the knotweed to be spread off site, you could find yourself at the wrong end of criminal proceedings,” Seal warns.
